GENERAL OVERVIEW (back to top)
Based on Games Workshops' Warhammer Fantasy series, Mythic Entertainment, now known as EA Mythic - creators of Dark Age of Camelot, have put together the next generation MMORPG.
Warhammer is all about War. From the moment you create your character, to six months down the road, expect to be involved in many aspects of PVP and RVR. The main focus of the game is to take over and pillage and plunder the enemy city.
Here is a great quick video that explains the PVP focus of the game: Video
There are 2 main sides to the war - order and destruction, as well as 3 racial battles between them. Greenskins (Orcs and Goblins) vs. Dwarves, Dark Elves vs. Elves, and Chaos vs. Empire. You can take part in any of the racial battles that correspond to your side.
Order vs. Destruction
Dwarves Greenskins
Elves Dark Elves
Empire Chaos
Adjust Your Gameplay will be playing on the Destruction side of the war.
REALM VS REALM (back to top)
In Warhammer Online the battlefront is constantly shifting as zones are captured from side to side. In order to capture or claim a zone for your race, you must contribute victory points to the overall war effort. There are 5 methods to generate victory points:
- PvE Questing
- Skirmishes
- Battlefields
- Scenarios
- Lower Zone Spillover Points
PvE Questing: For the carebears of Warhammer (we all love them for spending hours at the forge crafting us hot items!), you can contribute to the war effort without ever actually seeing or fighting another party. Simply running PvE quests will generate points for your side
Skirmishes: Skirmishes are the familiar PVP for Dark Age of Camelot vets. It is in fact roaming group vs. group PVP in the open fields of battle. Killing your enemy generates you a small amount of victory points
Battlefields: Battlefields are open field PVP with an objective such as capturing points, keeps, towers, and so on. Completing these objectives gives you a medium amount of victory points
Scenarios: Closely related to the PVP battlegrounds of World of Warcraft - these are instanced battlegrounds with a set objective. There is said to be over 40 different scenarios at the launch of Warhammer Online including Capture the Flag and Capture and Hold. Scenarios generate the largest amount of Victory Points
Lower Zone Spillover: Gone is the day where "lowbies" can't contribute to end-game content! Now all of the low level zones will spillover their victory points to the higher zones, meaning everyone can contribute to the overall war effort!
ACTION POINTS TACTICS AND MORALE (back to top)
If you see websites or forums discussing action points, they are essentially mana, or an ability bar that depletes as you use skills or spells. Skills, spells, and abilities all take a certain amount of action points, just like in any other game
Tactics work as passive like skills that you can equip for your class. Each class has a certain amount of tactic slots that they can use while the abilities will take up a number of them depending on the strength of the tactic. These can only be adjusted while out of combat. Some examples of tactics so far are increased intelligence, increased block rate, increased damage, etc.
Morale is a very important part of fighting in Warhammer. When engaged in combat, Morale is said to increase at a rate of 1% per second. At every 20% interval, each class will have a specific ability that can only be used when that level of morale has been achieved. Using a morale ability does not expend the morale, so simply passing the 20% mark will "unlock" that ability to be used repeatedly - as long as you keep fighting. You also seem to be able to customize your morale abilities, in that you slot them into different percentage positions. Slotting them higher (as in an 80% morale instead of 40%) will increase their strength.
THE WAAAAGH! (back to top)
The WAAAAGH is essentially a special ability offered to the Greenskins. It is said that Greenskins are the idiots of the world, and when they get together they get on a roll, and become enraged and bloodlusted the longer they are in battle. This translates in game terms to a special meter that affects their abilities.
For a goblin Shaman, using offensive abilities will "charge" the WAAAAGH! Meter. As the meter charges, Shaman heals become faster and cheaper. Without the WAAAAGH heals can take up to 5 seconds, but with a full meter they become instant. This brings a new element to the game where a shaman must effectively balance his or her offensive capabilities with their healing. A shaman that simply heals will not be as effective as someone who can micromanage their WAAAAGH.
